After touring the world as a member of the Postal Service in 2013, Laura Burhenn, aka The Mynabirds, took a year to get lost. She drove across the US twice, toured South Africa solo, made her first appearance in London (also solo), and trekked all over Europe with William Faulkner’s words ringing in her ears: “You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.” Finally she found herself in Los Angeles with a suitcase of songs to fill a whole new album. Lovers Know, the third full-length, will be released onAugust 7 via Saddle Creek.
 
This week Laura offers up a special treat: a lyric video for the album’s first single, “Semantics”, created with the MyIdol app combined with some gorgeous photos by Bliss Braoudakis. The app features turned out to be a perfect foil for the song. As Nylon noted in their premiere of the video: "each time the hook drops, some infectiously random scenes ensue, reminding us why we fell in love with the confusing-yet-addictive Chinese app in the first place (because who doesn’t want to see a cartoon version of herself holding up a roll of toilet paper that turns into an angel?)."
 
Another moment of hilarity came when it was time to translate the lyrics. "I made the entire video using MyIdol and was pretty impressed with myself,” Burhenn explains. “But then, when it was finished, I realized I had no idea what any of the Chinese subtitles said! So I got some help from an artist friend of mine, Ying Zhu, who is a native Chinese speaker. She translated everything for me, and it was pretty incredible how much the Chinese subtitles lined up with the actual song lyrics! Love songs definitely have a universal language, no matter how they’re sliced and diced. The lyrics are all posted with the video on YouTube, so definitely read them all there."

The first video (here) from The Mynabirds new album, Lovers Know, sprung from cosmic serendipity, perfectly befitting an album that represents many roads traveled.
 
“I did loads of traveling to make this new record, and everywhere I went, I found my people,” Laura Burhenn, aka The Mynabirds, explains, noting locales as far flung as South Africa, and as close to her heart as Omaha, her home for 6 years before recently relocating to Los Angeles. “So when my manager called and said, ‘I met this woman who makes films with a collective called Dirty Girls, and I feel like you two should meet’, I took it as a sign."
 
Laura was immediately intrigued by the Dirty Girls’ story: “I watched the documentary VICE featured of them back in high school in the 90s, and I knew at once we would've been best friends if we’d grown up in the same town.” In other words, it was only a matter of time. Their first meeting took place on a paddle boat in the middle of Echo Park lake, because “Why have a meeting on land when you could have it on the water??”
 
“The song "Wildfire" is partly based on that Jack Kerouac quote ("The only people for me are the mad ones..."), and finding your people,” she continues. “So it felt fitting to be in a town that's pretty new to me, but to feel totally at home in the company of these amazing babes. We made this video as an ode to making new friends and helping each other through dark times.”
 
In “Wildfire” the women help a young girl pick herself back up after being pushed around by a bully, and the girl reciprocates by helping Laura face her own very real fear of roller coasters. “That coaster on the Santa Monica pier might not be much to most people, but dammit, I've been terrified of roller coasters all my life, so I rode it. And it was awesome. So much of my life I feel like Bill Murray in "What About Bob." I'm scared shitless of so many things, but I do them anyway, cause I want to grow and life my life as full as I can. It's all about the baby steps, y'all -- and having friends to hold your hand while you take every tiny, single one!”
 
About The Dirty Girls Project
The Dirty Girls Project is a new media platform devoted to the promotion of empowered, badass women of all ages. We create original content, synergistic partnerships and produce collaborations (both digital and physical) around topics such as art, adventure, fashion, entrepreneurship—the bad, the rad and the weird. Inspired by the viral video Dirty Girls, a short documentary about a group of fearless, iconoclastic high school girls in the 90s, The Dirty Girls Project reunites the original Dirty Girls, now successful professionals, with the mission of inspiring, influencing, and championing women and girls for personal, social and commercial success.

Led by Laura Burhenn and produced by Bradley Hanan Carter of Black English, The Mynabirds' third full-length album, Lovers Know, explores influences of 80s, 90s, and futuristic soundscapes. The result is arguably one of Burhenn’s most personal and confessional works to date, yet also her most accessible, delving deep into universal themes of love, loss, and seeking connection. Lovers Know is out now via Saddle Creek. Having premiered on NPR Music, the record is available to purchase via the label’s website and iTunes. It has been hailed by NPR as "a collection of jewels, bright and eclectic," by Drowned In Sound as “the most wonderful independently released all-caps POP album of the year,” and by Consequence of Sound as "Burhenn’s most honest and personal statement yet."

The Mynabirds are proud to announce their third full-length album, Lovers Know, set for release on August 7 via Saddle Creek.  Led by Laura Burhenn and produced by Bradley Hanan Carter of Black English, the album was recorded internationally over a yearlong period and forges into previously unexplored territory.  Exploring influences of 80s, 90s, and futuristic soundscapes, the record recalls Kate Bush, Sinead O’Connor, Jesus and Mary Chain, and My Bloody Valentine.  The result is arguably one of Burhenn’s most personal and confessional works to date, yet also her most accessible.

A perfect intro to an album steeped in “break-up” themes, “Semantics” explores the complicated optics that color any long-term love. “Have you heard about the Buddhist monks who meditated on polluted water molecules?” asks Burhenn. “The molecules changed from sad, brown amorphous things into beautiful geometric shapes that looked genuinely happy. That's pretty much what this song is about. Long love is tough and it takes a lot of effort. It gets bent out of shape, and brown and a little amorphous over time. So in ‘Semantics’ I'm asking, "Does it matter what we call things, what we call 'Us'? And yeah, it does. It can change everything. If we call love something beautiful, if we put the energy into it being that, we can transform into that.”
 
Lovers Know is loaded with a fresh palette of new sounds — radiating synths, gauzy electric guitars, and electronic drums – but Burhenn’s brooding, unmistakable voice still leads the way.  Often depicted on the album are the universal themes of love, loss, and seeking connection.  “Love – or the lack of it – is the thing we all have in common.  It can destroy us.  It can break us open and let the light in.  And it’s also the thing that can make us sing,” says Burhenn.

Led by Laura Burhenn and produced by Bradley Hanan Carter of Black English, the album explores influences of 80s, 90s, and futuristic soundscapes, while recalling Kate Bush, Sinead O’Connor, Jesus and Mary Chain, and My Bloody Valentine. The result is arguably one of Burhenn’s most personal and confessional works to date, yet also her most accessible, delving deep into universal themes of love, loss, and seeking connection. The first two singles from the album are “Semantics” and “Wildfire” which are now available to hear and share on YouTube.

“Love – or the lack of it – is the thing we all have in common,” notes Burhenn about the themes weaving together the new album. “It can destroy us. It can break us open and let the light in. And it’s also the thing that can make us sing.”

The Mynabirds are pleased to release their newest single, “Wildfire”, an ebullient summer anthem premiering on Consequence of Sound this week. The track is from the band’s third album, Lovers Know, dropping August 7 on Saddle Creek.
 
““Wildfire” is about staying alive, staying wild, living and loving to the fullest, despite death nipping at our heels,” says Laura Burhenn, the primary artist behind The Mynabirds. “It's an ode to that Jack Kerouac quote from "On the Road," and everyone in this world who embodies that and inspires the hell out of me: The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars."
